To celebrate NADOC week my high school Science classes chose a plant or animal from the Awabakal Season calendar. They learnt their name in language & important roles in the environment. Whilst Students created a beautiful mask of their chosen being the gentle, warm conversations were insightful. Once they got the hang of “being” there species with a partner, the conversations opened up around the room. Amazing to see how we all love a role play & shared experiences. Connecting with ancestral land xxxooo

Still sitting with all of the deep, cellular feelings - my limited cognition hasn’t caught up / is unable to speak to the knowing & shift that is occurring within me. Thank you both x
Wow, 10 days ago I made a video about the book John co-authored in 1988. Tonight I managed to join his Instagram live and ask him about the book. And now I open Substack to find this wonderful conversation. ❤️
Life tends to go like that. Is that the book he coauthored with Joanna Macy? I had to fly Sydney to Hobart a few weeks ago, just after recording the iv. On the plane was a woman who was returning from his village. When I got to my venue someone was talking about him!
I find that kind of synchronicity feels supportive. It’s interesting that John turns up in your life when you have wrestled with the grief of collapse in this community and in the writing of your book. On the other side to some extent with a profound commitment to grieving in community.
The video I made 11 days was talking about “Thinking Like A Mountain: Towards A Council Of Beings” which is the book John co-authored with Joanna Macy, Arne Ness and Pat Fleming. The “Thinking Like A Mountain” part of the title was a tip of the hat to an essay of Aldo Leopold titled “Thinking Like A Mountain”.
That’s what I got to ask him about last night on the Instagram Live.

I love these conversations, they light me up when it all feels so dark. I find embodied practices such as yoga and qi gong are helpful in returning us to our bodies, less in the mind, and working with natural cycles rather than against them. Aboriginal culture doesn’t separate humans from the environment either. I love your simple suggestions John, such as connecting with grass in between cracks on city footpaths.
