A few years back my sister and I planned an adventure in the Cinque Terre region. We stopped giving each other birthday gifts a while back and gifted each other an adventure together instead :) This one was without a doubt my favourite so far - We flew to Nice, then got the train to Levanto and hiked the mountain trail (2 days of hiking and absolutely stunning views of the 5 fishing villages below), then we hiked back from Riomaggiore to Monterosso along the mid trail (1 day - we wanted to do the coastal trail but most of it was closed) and then on our last day we SUP'd back to Riomaggiore (2.5 hours paddle) . SO much fun - epic food and we managed to experience Cinque Terre without the zillions of tourists. Highly recommend !

Hi Sarah, firstly, thank you for all the humanity you radiate and in doing so allow others to access in themselves. My question (I'm sorry I'm new to Substack and could not locate the AMA): how did you overcome the fear (if any) of hiking and camping alone? Context: I have always appreciated your work but felt like my brain molecules had been rearranged after reading "One Wild and Precious Life" back in 2020 when I was recovering from meningoencephalitis during lockdown. I have enjoyed some half-day hikes but my love of walking in Nature is not reflected in my past or current efforts. Now, re-acquainting myself with you through your Collapse work, I will change that. I am incredibly brave and resilient but for some reason still working to overcome my fear of personal safety being alone as a female in Nature, especially overnight. Just looking for some reassurance or tips if you have them to give. Yours in inspiration - Alice :)
