The world needs a speaker or a voice like Carls right now, to help us rediscover the awe and wonder of being a human being. And the awe and wonder of this gift, each other, and this world we have been given. Such a shame.
When the government becomes a vehicle for a societies greater demons rather than their greater angels then the world is about to collapse. Comes back to Moloch, and a rapidly increasing momentum to rock bottom and destruction.
Israel is sacrificing the minds, bodies and souls of its youth in order to protect its destructive ideology (zionism). While Hamas does the same.
I like the Guardian, but the gotcha brand of tribal journalism is the exact same disease. Based on protection of one's assets, income or increasingly our own polarised political views based on our egos position of strength.
The fever of "woke" ideology is just as hot as the "neo fascist", the lefts endless navel gazing for how it is victimised or who is the perpetrator, taking power and responsibility away from those who need to step up themselves? Versus the shamed, aggressive, current or previous power holder, looking to blame everyone, and never daring to take responsibility for themselves.
How do we shift the information gathered, and its delivery, to instil a sense of trust and understanding? How do we protect the vulnerable youth so that their developing minds do not latch onto either camp and surrender their power, life and body to sick adults?
I had a good chat to some Israeli guys way back two years ago, they could see what Bibi was doing , they knew that it was a 50/50 chance that he allowed it to happen , and they knew that they could not trust him or the government. They knew that everyone was getting screwed. And as the power hungry get more stressed they are only going to turn up the heat so everyone scrambles to their side.
Global strike is the only way I think, along with people in the media taking the chance to call out all platforms and demand a return to balanced reporting. Btw, not accusing him of biased reporting, he was doing a decent job of letting people speak. But there is a problem with the platforms and the method of debate.
Global strike , and discussion of the two state solution to put pressure on the UN to come in and put a military force on the ground to implement it. Time up, Israel was a gift, and if you break it, you lose it.
I would love to see Hamas release the hostages and then stand still and let Israel and its people properly expose itself. Like Kendrick Lamar says , "corrupt a mans heart with a gift, then you know who you're dealing with".
Oh there is no way Israel is going to stop. Hamas needs to realise that and give the hostages back in order to strengthen their moral position with the world.
The UN is going to have to splinter and kick out America, Russia and China, anyone who can veto, and go it alone. The only way the violence will stop is via more violence. Either civil disobedience and unrest within Israel , or a global force invading. The two state solution was agreed upon, but is not of interest to anyone who has proximity to power.
The world is going to have to unleash pain upon the Israelis in order to encourage them to step up and do the right thing. As the interviews found, the propaganda, or physical or psychological barriers to the suffering are too great. It will not be until the Israelis suffer again that it will change. It is sad, but I cannot see another way.
Tel Aviv should be warned to evacuate , and then levelled by Italian, and Spanish forces, I am sure the IRA would love to lend a hand too.
Did you see the shooting at the Mormon church in the states? A white ex service man drove his pick up truck with two big american flags on the back into the church. And then killed 4 people and set it alight. The symbolism of the mad world eating itself is horribly poetic. It is rapidly moving towards a place of no return. Where trust in each other is completely eroded. And human values and honour are discarded for ideology or just pure madness.
Heart breaking, showing what happens when people are brainwashed into believing they are superior and others are de humanised . A courageous post and discussion, thank you Sarah.
How do you even begin to end a war when one side seems to refuse to believe what they are seeing of its impact? It’s mind blowing - especially as they have experienced such a genocide themselves and said ‘never again’ yet here they are the perpetrators of one in living memory of the other. Incomprehensible.
Classic trauma response, aka drama triangle, the victim becomes the perpetrator, using agresssion in order to not create the same outcome. And round and round we go.
Unless a society is able to develop individuals who can govern it as adults. Who can display and stick to some level of honour, and has decent values, which they are willing to die for. You get a sick, narcissistic society.
God died long ago, and was replaced by sick priests, the marketplace, therapy, toys, and distractions. The only way out is to start from scratch. I just hope that "scratch" is not to horrible a place.
I’m trying to be mindful of language, but this is chilling. An absolute inability to see clearly, which is why it’s so important for the rest of us to not turn away. To know the truth, we have to see what we don’t want to see.
I’ve just paused the video because I wanted to comment on the first 2 minutes or so. Watching your exchange and hearing a brief account of the adventure to an out of the way restaurant to engage with another human … I felt a swell in my heart, recognising your openness, your curiosity. It’s lovely… and I had to say so before I watched any more.
I saw Matthew Cassel’s video from Tel Aviv and was shocked to the core, hit by a stultifying sense of numbness and inability to process my horror at what is happening in the world right now. Alongside my shock at Iain McGilchrist’s most recent posts, I am reeling! I was relieved and strangely grounded to hear your conversation with Matthew last night. Thank you both for your work. All power to those who are illuminating and speaking out against the atrocities the US supported Israel is committing in Gaza and the Middle East. I need to go back to ‘I Eat the Stars’ for ways to cope Sarah
I found the piece he shared by Hannah Spier MD and his follow up ‘explainer’ really disturbing. I’m finding it hard to process the very binary Right / Left political framing expressed there in the posts and the ensuing conversations, and wonder if anyone here has any thoughts?
I was, frankly, bamboozled by Spier's article. The gross generalisations seemed really irresponsible (shaggy bobs??) and her equivalencies seemed false and in bad faith. I just don't know that hordes of progressives are celebrating Kirk's death. I think some comments have probably been made that Kirk died from a gun, something he advocated. He dismissed murders by guns as "collateral"....
I also don't understand where this menacing progressive force resides, where its power base is.
Spier seemed to be lining up right alongside the MAGA style paranoia about ‘progressives’ even fuelling it, and McGlichrists explainer seemed to add more to the flames against a ‘menacing progressive force’. David Bentley Hart addresses this in a helpful way in the comments but phew, the whole thing exemplified the extent of our current polarisation. Hearing from the Matthew on Tel Aviv, alongside the fawning responses to the US administration both at home and in the UK slammed me with the sense of the dystopia in which we are living!
so fascinating how narrative shapes our core beliefs. how do we re-shape narrative when its so easy to undermine photographs and footage as AI and 'fake news' and 'gazawood' ? How do we re-shape narrative? such as core question, for everywhere
Curiously I had watched the full documentary by Cassel on the Guardian yesterday and one thought came to mind: wouldn’t it be easier if awareness was raised by Israeli Jewish voices themselves? I think in general different perspectives could be offered through compassionate and non violent dialogue and maybe using ways to lower resistance rather than pointing out to wrongdoing. People feel accused and it serves nobody to keep building walls…
I am full of deep sadness for the genocide perpetrated by the IDF but also for those Jews who will suffer from antisemitism without having taken part in supporting this horror. 💔
There are a lot of Jewish people critical of the war and of Zionism in general.
This reminds me of Julian Assange saying that with honest media there are no wars… the level of brainwashing is incomprehensible. It also reminds me of the recent reactions to the assassination of Charlie Kirk ~ people’s reactions differed so vastly based on the media they had been consuming/targeted with.
Check out the film Israelism & also the Jewish Council if you haven’t as yet. Good antidote.
I imagine most Palestinians are really just troubled by and focused on surviving another day.
PS that is absolutely not true regarding no women hostages returned!!! There were multiple this week. That's very concerning you're begin told (or untold) otherwise.
92 Israeli and foreign women and girls were taken hostage and held in Gaza during the October 7 attack. The majority of Israeli women and all Israeli girls held hostage were released during the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas at the end of November 2023.
Wow, that YouTube video report from Tel Aviv.
Makes me think of the Carl Sagan quote.
“You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe”
...and need to believe what keeps you safe in your beliefs....

Hi
I imagine most Palestinians are really just troubled by and focused on surviving another day.

Hey Geoff,
92 Israeli and foreign women and girls were taken hostage and held in Gaza during the October 7 attack. The majority of Israeli women and all Israeli girls held hostage were released during the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas at the end of November 2023.
that's because they were returned in 2023
All the remaining Israeli hostages have been returned now, so I'm not sure what you're saying?
