Hugs, Sar. Go well, travel safe and may you slip back into a Parisian groove without too much trouble and may the words keep tumbling out of you.

Much love x

Wow. So much to think about in this post. I had been wondering about our transition to electric cars and solar and if it is as promised. I still drive a petrol car in hope of one day being able to drive less - walk to work or catch public transport. I see so many teslas and wonder about why they are popular and where the cars are that we’re driver by those owners before they bought their fast Tesla…yes better than petrol but I do wonder about the merits when we are still buying to consume the latest thing.

As for your information on pro- Natalism am….with that combine with Trump - is Hand maids tale coming true?

And yes, we hate not knowing, and the sad thing is kids hate not knowing too. Our adult behaviour is not helping them as so many young kids at school can’t wait, they need to google and the question why they have to wait….it’s hard.

Yes, we are cocooning kids from everything...except for real life

So wonderful to gather briefly with some of this community tonight in Byron.

Just read your post on Hipster Eugenics where you wrote “Our responses are not only making the problem worse, they make the OG problem look almost benign.”

That was only 10 months ago that you wrote that yet it seems quite prophetic and even more prescient today!

Expand full comment

Ha, yes, I find it uncanny when I read something I wrote YEARS back and realise nothing has changed (and then worry I don't have original ideas!!)

Expand full comment

Interesting that the pre-conception eugenics discussion skipped the eyesight test - and possibly the psychological stability or a basic IQ test too - I wonder what else they missed? Is Mormonism considered a genetically preferred feature?

Is it a failed experiment if the offspring fail to be exceptional?

I have questions!

See you in the library Steve 🙌

I was also thinking, what if these offspring turn out to be average or even have some sort of disability? I'm afraid for how those parents would react and treat that child. Highly problematic to bring a child into the world while expecting a particular child. How does a parent's unconditional love factor in? The Collinses scare me.

I’ve not gotten through this whole read, but I just listened to the latest pod!

When I saw it was with a Prof, I was hoping you’d ask about the University conundrum!

Thankyou for asking Joel, I agree with what he’s saying about learning the ‘soft’ skills which are so needed for the times, I just think there must be a better way then having a bagillion $ HECS debt 😅

...I also LOL’d when you said ‘get off the dating apps Sarah, that’s the lesson here’ hahahaha!!

pleaseure. I'll go look at his response now ,too

I loved your interview with Professor Joel Pearson on Intuition and look forward to another interview with Joel on his latest project - no doubt it will touch on synchronicity as in my experience following your intuition leads to beautiful experiences of synchronicity. I see your high ranking here on Substack for Australian producers https://substack.com/globe?country=AU Happy travelling and best wishes

Great post, Sarah. God, the natalist stuff boils my blood. And along those same lines is the rise of the "trad wife" movement. Young women choosing to be fully submissive to their husbands, except maybe what she decides to cook for dinner. The backlash towards feminism and equality has taken a really sinister turn the last couple of years, aligned nicely with the rise of authoritarianism. It's scary.

I feel the same. I'm watching women become apologetic again for being feminist and for voicing up (still)

and something that just popped up in my feed. algorithms targeting young women with misinformation about birth control.

Sarah, yes this is a thing! Do you think you might write more about this? Or have you already? “I’m feeling what I always feel when I’m stepping back into the frightening unknown…a free-falling melancholy that exposes to me all the choices I’ve made in my life - good, bad and inevitable.”

Expand full comment

Do you mean the fertility crisis?

Expand full comment

Sorry I meant this experience you described: “the feeling of stepping back into the frightening unknown - the free falling melancholy that exposes all the choices you’ve made in your life - good, bad and inevitable” How going back to Paris is provoking this experience, these feelings. And how you navigate it. Because I think this is common…

Ah ok. Let me sit with your question and feel free to post it in the AMA section!

Missed the earlier piece on pro-natalism, thanks for linking in, I think... what the actual?! Just when I think humanity has shown the worst of its dehumanising destructive capabilities, along comes another mind boggling group-think to shock.

That capture of the library scene is everything!!!

See you tonight! So glad to be here for it. x

All good , just feeling the menagerie of topics in your post , empathising with your trip back to the unknown , feeling my own unknowns, knowing what needs to be done and the work ahead , just a little steam release 👌🏼✌🏼

Btw, weird thing to say , but I have been reflecting on this hybrid social media, media, personal interaction model you have created here on Substack. Whilst pondering the false intimacy of socials and the online world.

I think what you are doing is grand, but also wanted to acknowledge, it is a load to carry for yourself. All of these online and face to face interactions.

And wanted to say, I as a subscriber do not expect face to face meet ups , and if you ever need to pull out of one then do so.

And wanted to also say thanks for the level of effort that you put into your online interactions and support of discussions. ✌🏼🙏🏼

oh dear, tears?

Yes… we can’t understand the unknown.

I’ve seen a little about Kate Middleton excitement… and after we’ve spent time in hospitals for my baby’s two surgeries this year… I wonder if maybe.. it’s just nice (or survival) to be out of the eye of others for awhile….

Exactly. There can sometimes be a gentle (non)explanation that we might want to choose to settle into. Not knowing is a gentle space, generally.
